SUMMARY:Dialogues in Translation
DESCRIPTION:Karen Van Dyck\, Xiaolu Guo\, Kaiama L. Glover\, and Zaid Jab
ri\, all former fellows of Columbia’s Institute for Ideas
and Imagination\, will discuss their diverse practices of tra
nslation and transliteration\, and the artistic and political
consequences of living\, working\, and moving between languag
es. The conversation began in spring 2019 at the Institute i
n Paris around Karen Van Dyck’s research on translingual w
riting of the Greek Diaspora which addresses the multilingua
l lives of migrants as a resource for literature\, translatio
n and social policy. Various types of movement among places
 - diasporic\, immigrant\, exilic\, cosmopolitan - imagine diff
erent forms of translation that emphasize diverse ways of mo
ving among languages: diglossia\, intralingualism\, transliter
ation\, homophony. Might such translingual collaborations off
er alternative translation practices and solutions to the im
 passes of ethnocentrism?
