Abram de Swaan

Abram de Swaan is emeritus distinguished research professor of social science at the University of Amsterdam and presently Adjunct Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. After graduate studies at Yale U.and U. of California, Berkeley, he received his PhD in political science at the University of Amsterdam (c.l.). He trained and practiced as a psychoanlalytic therapist.  He was co-founder, director and later chairman of the Amsterdam School of Social science Research (1987-2007), and has taught at Cornell, Columbia, Paris-Sorbonne and the Collège de France (chaire Européenne). His books have been translated in a dozen languages. He was awarded the PC Hooft national prize for literature.
