Adam Phillips

Psychoanalyst and Essayist

Adam Phillips is a psychoanalyst and a visiting professor in the English department at the University of York who writes frequently for the London Review of Books. Since 2003 he has been the general editor of the new Penguin Modern Classics translations of Sigmund Freud. Susanna Rustin in The Guardian claims that, "Today he is one of a tiny handful of psychoanalysts with a trade publisher ... and a media profile."

He is the author of many books, including On Kissing, Tickling, and Being Bored; Going Sane; Side Effects; and On Balance. He is also the coauthor, with the historian Barbara Taylor, of On Kindness, and with Leo Bersani, of Intamacies.  His latest publication is Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life.
