Alice Wiemer's work focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on twentieth-century economic and social history. Her work engages with themes of development policy and practice; citizenship and participation; and agriculture, labor, and families. Her current research is a microhistory of development practice, labor, and family in a small town in northern Ghana, from 1942 to the present.
