Alvan A. Ikoku is assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and associated faculty at the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Bioethics. His work combines training in the study of literature, history, and medicine. He received his bachelor's degree in human biology and the humanities at Stanford, an MPhil in history of medicine at Oxford, an MD at Harvard, and this year he will receive a PhD in English and comparative literature at Columbia.

Dr Ikoku focuses on literature and global health, bioethics and medical humanities, postcolonial theory, and Anglophone and Francophone literatures concerning Africa and its diaspora. He has written for the World Heath Organization and his recent publications have appeared in Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics and Virtual Mentor, the ethics journal of the American Medical Association. He is currently working on a book-length study of literature and literary rhetoric in the development of modern antimalarial thought and tropical medicine as a medical specialty.
