Barbara Sattler's primary area of focus is metaphysics and natural philosophy in the ancient Greek world, especially with the Pre-socratics, Plato and Aristotle. At the moment she is about to finish a book on how nature came to be established as a proper object of scientific endeavour in ancient Greece (Natural Philosophy in Ancient Greece). Professor Sattler is also at work on another book project on how the understanding of time changed dramatically in the thought of writers at the very beginning of the Western tradition (Ancient Notions of Time). She began studying German literature, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Vienna, and received her doctorate from the FU-Berlin - spending time also at the University of St. Andrews and Oxford. Professor Sattler's first job was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has been at Yale University since 2007.
