Emma Rothschild is Professor of History and Director of the Joint Center for History and Economics at Harvard University, and an Honorary Professor of History and Economics at the University of Cambridge. She works on eighteenth-century history, especially the history of economic thought and economic history. Her publications include Paradise Lost: The Decline of the Auto-Industrial Age, Economic Sentiments: Adam Smith, Condorcet and the Enlightenment , and The Inner Life of Empires: An Eighteenth-Century History.  She has been a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and the Council on Science and Technology in the United Kingdom, and was Chair of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development.
