Melissa Milewski

Melissa Milewski is an ACLS New Faculty Fellow at Columbia University, where she teaches in the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race and the Department of History. She received her Ph.D. in American History from New York University in 2011.  Her research interests include the intersections of race and the law, legal history, slavery and Reconstruction, African American History, and the history of women and gender.  She is currently working on a book examining civil cases between white and black Southerners in the 50 years after the Civil War.  Her article, "From Slave to Litigant: African Americans in the Court in the Postwar South, 1865-1920," was recently published in the August 2012 Law & History Review.
