Penny Summerfield

Penny Summerfield is a Professor of Modern History at University of Manchester where she has served as Head of the School of History and Classics (2002-3) followed by Head of the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures (2003-6).

Her most recent book is Contesting Home Defence: Men, Women and the Home Guard in Britain in the Second World War, completed in conjunction with Corinna Peniston-Bird and published by Manchester University Press in 2007.  She has published extensively, including  Feminism and Autobiography: Texts, Theories, Methods (2000), Reconstructing Women's Wartime Lives: Discourse and Subjectivity in Oral Histories of the Second World War (1998), and Women, Power and Resistance, an introduction to Women's Studies (1996) as well as many scholarly articles.
