Virginia Valian

Virginia Valian is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Hunter College. She recieved her Ph.D. from Northeastern University. Her lab's current research investigates two-year-olds' knowledge and use of language; second language learners' performance on similar tasks; native speakers' performance on similar sentences with different tasks; the role of input in syntax acquisition; and gender differences in mathematics problem-solving.

Professor Valian's publications include Why So Slow: The Advancement of Women (1999), a work that uses concepts and data from psychology, sociology, economics, and biology to explain the disparity in the professional advancement of men and women.
